What is your GPA cut-off?
There is no specific GPA cut-off. Although marks are taken into consideration in the application process, extracurricular activities as well as volunteering and school involvement are also considered as valued credentials. We look for well-rounded candidates who demonstrate leadership and interpersonal skills, as well as show initiative and integrity.

Do I need accounting experience to be considered?
No, we do not expect students to have experience when applying for a co-op position at Welch. We provide training and development for our new employees and students, equipping them with the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to succeed in their careers.

What will my first day be like?
Your first day will be spent learning your way around the office! You will be assigned a “buddy,” meet with the Partner that you will be working with as well as your team members, and start to learn the kinds of things that you will be working on.

Will I work long hours?
During busy season, our employees are expected to work extended hours to ensure their work is completed. From January to April, our staff work 9 hours per day and occasionally put in extra time if needed.

What is the work environment like at Welch?
Our environment is very team oriented; rarely will you find yourself working in an isolated environment. We operate like a family, helping one another to succeed and move forward.

Do I have to have a car?
Welch is located in downtown Ottawa, making it easily accessible by public transportation. Many clients will be accessible by public transportation and if they are not, arrangements will be made with the Manager/Partner to get you to the client’s location.

How will my career progress at Welch?
Welch offers opportunities for career advancement using a three level manager career path promotion system based on performance. The manager role at Welch is a very important one as it relates to service delivery, training and development of our staff and soliciting new clients.

What is Welch’s dress code?
Clothing that is business professional is expected when meeting with clients, however, when you are solely working in the office, business casual is appropriate.

What type of support does Welch give to students working towards their CPA designation?
Welch provides competitive financial and educational support for our students working towards their CPA designation up to and including their Common Final Exam (CFE).

Are there opportunities at Welch for me to work around the world?
Welch has contracts with government clients which have taken our staff to over 25 countries around the world on short term assignments. Welch is also part of an international association of Chartered Professional Accountants and Business Advisors called BKR International. BKR has over 160 member firms, with 500 offices, in over 80 countries around the world. Member firms regularly refer projects to and from one another, which allows for opportunities to work globally through one of our BKR member locations.

What type of client industries will I be exposed to?
Welch offers services to clients from a wide variety of industries and sectors. We serve clients in automotive, real estate, construction, not-for-profit and government sectors, just to name a few. This allows for our new employees to gain experience in all areas of accounting.

How soon after joining the firm will I be given real responsibilities?
When you join us as a staff accountant, you will be doing basic accounting and auditing under direct Manager/Partner supervision, either alone or as part of a team. New staff accountants are often pleasantly surprised at the level of responsibility they are encouraged to take on when they join us.
